Why These Programs are Needed: Psychological health and safety issues in the workplace are pervasive, and have a number of negative impacts on organizations when left unaddressed. Increasingly, the onus is on employers to protect the psychological safety of their employees in the workplace.  The University of Fredericton has responded to this need with the launch of its new, fully-online Certificates in Psychological Health and Safety, developed by Dr. Joti Samra, R. Psych., and with the support of the Great-West Life Centre for Mental Health in the Workplace (the Centre). The Certificates are also supported by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), and the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC).

The UFred Certificates in Psychological Health and Safety have been developed to help today’s workforce leaders better address potential negative psychosocial factors in the workplace, and support employees experiencing emotional distress or mental health issues or disorders. There are three different options available, with the best fit being determined based on the individual/organization’s particular needs.

For Whom These Programs are Designed: There are three options available to those seeking to further their psychological health and safety (PH&S) knowledge:

Basic Level

Our Basic Level consists of an introductory course titled An Introduction to Psychological Health & Safety in the Workplace. The course is designed to help organizations bring their employees up-to-speed on their roles in maintaining a psychologically healthy and safe work environment, providing a stronger understanding of PH&S concepts. As such, this course is applicable to learners and employees of all levels and abilities.  Those who complete the Basic Level course will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Advanced Certificate

The Advanced Certificate consists of the introductory course, plus four additional courses, and provides a solid knowledge-base about how to plan, implement, and evaluate psychological health and safety programs in the context of the National Standard. This level of the Certificate is designed for organizational leaders implementing workplace health and safety management systems for all employees. Those working in supervisory positions within Occupational Health and Safety units, Human Resources departments, or any other department that may be responsible for implementing an overarching organizational health strategy, including mental health, for a body of employees will find this Certificate to be beneficial. Once all five courses in the Advanced Certificate have been successfully completed, participants are awarded a Certificate in Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace.This Certificate is the first certificate program in Canada to be delivered completely online with a specific focus on the new National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace (the Standard). The Standard is the first of its kind in the world; it was championed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC), and developed by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA Group) and the Bureau de normalisation du Québec (BNQ), and provides a benchmark for which organizations can strive to reach to ensure the psychological health and safety of their workers.

Manager Certificate

Those in management or supervisory positions are often the first to deal with individual employees who are emotionally distressed or experiencing a mental health issue or disorder. Though these issues may be entirely independent of specific workplace factors, in some cases the psychological health issues may in fact be triggered or exacerbated by workplace environment factors.

The Manager Certificate begins with an introductory course on PH&S concepts. The focus then shifts to managing psychological health issues of individual employees with two additional courses. The courses provide in-depth learning on key principles and considerations for managers in supporting employees with psychological health issues, as well as enhancing managers’ emotional intelligence skills in managing emotionally distressed employees. This Certificate is suitable for those in management roles supporting the individual employee experiencing emotional distress or mental health issues or disorders. As such, those working in management roles across industries and organizations will find this Certificate to be beneficial. Once all three courses have been successfully completed, participants are awarded a Certificate in Managing Psychological Health Issues at Work.

Enrolment Prerequisites

Candidates must have an interest in the subject. Beyond this, it is essential that the candidate have access to a computer with an internet connection.

The Online Experience

The UFred Certificates in Psychological Health and Safety are delivered fully-online and asynchronously, meaning that participants can move through the courses on a self-paced schedule. This convenient, flexible delivery method allows for employees and leaders to participate in the courses and apply their knowledge in real-time. Sponsoring agents realize substantial savings in training costs, reductions in training time, elimination of travel requirements, and improvement in staff retention and productivity.

The online campus is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, requiring only internet access. Participants will gain practical knowledge while working on their own schedules, adding immediate value to their organizations.

Program Outline and Courses

There are three Certificate options for those seeking to augment their knowledge in this field: the Basic Level, the Advanced Certificate, and the Manager Certificate.

Basic Level Course

Our Introductory Level Course is designed to bring employees of all levels and abilities up-to-speed on basic psychological health and safety in the workplace principles and how best to maintain an environment that protects these concepts. Those who successfully complete the Basic Level Course will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Advanced Certificate Courses

Our Advanced courses prepare participants for leadership roles by providing the tools and skills necessary to creating, implementing, and evaluating effective PH&S programs within the framework of the National Standard. Those who successfully complete all five courses will receive a Certificate in Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace.

Please note: participants must first complete the Basic Level course before proceeding into the Advanced Certificate.

Manager Certificate Courses

Our Manager courses place specific emphasis on the needs of managers who are supporting individual employees experiencing emotional distress or mental health issues or disorders. Please note: participants must first complete the Basic Level course before proceeding into the Manager Certificate. Those who successfully complete all three courses will receive a Certificate in Managing Psychological Health Issues at Work.

  • Suitable for those working in supervisory positions in OH&S, HR, or other departments responsible for implementing a firm’s overarching organizational health strategy, including mental health
  • Participants who successfully complete all five courses will receive a Certificate in Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace

Manager Certificate (3 Courses)

  • Basic Level PH&S Course, plus two additional courses
  • Provides key principles and considerations for managers in supporting individual employees
  • Focuses on enhancing managers’ emotional intelligence skills in managing emotionally distressed employees
  • Suitable for those working in management roles, who may be required to work with individual employees experiencing emotional distress or mental health issues or disorders
  • Suitable for managers across industries and organizations
  • Participants who successfully complete all three courses will receive a Certificate in Managing Psychological Health Issues at Work

Certificate of Completion

Participants who complete PHS0100: An Introduction to Psychological Health & Safety (PH&S) in the Workplace will receive a Certificate of Completion. To receive the Certificate in Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace, participants must complete either the Advanced Certificate or the Manager Certificate, at which point a Certificate in Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace will be issued with the concentration completed.

Tuition Fees

Students are able to pay course-at-a-time if they wish at a cost of $575.00 CAD per course, or are able to pay for a full Certificate at once. Tuition for each program (in Canadian dollars) is as follows:

Students who receive a failing grade on the final exam of any PHS course will be required to pay a $75 fee to rewrite the exam.

Basic Level (One Course)

PHS Refund Policy

Extensions

  • If you are in need of an extension, this may be done through Learner Support at no cost.

Leave of Absence

  • If you require a leave of absence from your studies, this may also be done through Learner Support.

Course Withdrawal/ Course Transfer Fee

  • If withdrawal or transfer from the course is within the first week, a refund for the entire course tuition will be issued, less a $75 Withdrawal Fee.
  • If withdrawal from the course is after the first week, no refund is available.

About Dr. Joti Samra, R. Psych., Lead Developer

Dr. Joti Samra, R.Psych. is an innovator in the area of psychological health and wellness in the workplace. Her research catalyzes fundamental improvements in the psychological health and safety of work environments throughout Canada.
Dr. Samra pursues a full spectrum of research, consulting, and educational activities in the field of workplace health. She is the lead developer of Guarding Minds @ Work: A Workplace Guide to Psychological Health and Safety, an innovative online resource to address psychosocial threats in the work environment, and was a member of the Technical Committee that developed Canada’s first National Standard on Psychological Health & Safety in the Workplace (CSA Z1003/BNQ9700). She is also the principal developer of Managing Emotions, a set of online, interactive assessment and training resources that strengthen the emotional intelligence skills of managers. Dr. Samra is a frequent media commentator and presents her work extensively at the invitation of organizations across North America. She is the Director of an organizational and media consulting practice, and maintains a clinical practice in Vancouver, BC.
