Background and purpose
Our online Certificate in Managing Psychological Health Issues at Work begins with an introductory course on PH&S concepts. The focus then shifts to managing psychological health issues of individual employees with two additional courses. The courses provide in-depth learning on key principles and considerations for managers in supporting employees with psychological health issues, as well as enhancing managers’ emotional intelligence skills in managing emotionally distressed employees.
What does a PH&S Manager's Certificate student look like?
This Certificate is suitable for those in management roles supporting the individual employee experiencing emotional distress or mental health issues or disorders. As such, those working in management roles across industries and organizations will find this Certificate to be beneficial.
Candidates must have an interest in the subject. Beyond this, it is essential that the candidate have access to a computer with an internet connection.

Program outline and courses
Basic Level Course
Our Introductory Level Course is designed to bring employees of all levels and abilities up-to-speed on basic psychological health and safety in the workplace principles and how best to maintain an environment that protects these concepts. Those who successfully complete the Basic Level Course will receive a Certificate of Completion.
PHS 0100 – An Introduction to Psychological Health & Safety (PH&S) in the Workplace
This is an introductory course that will provide an overview of the basic concepts of psychological health and safety in the workplace and is designed for learners of all levels. Students will become familiar with the basics of psychological health and safety (PHS); will understand the legal, health and business case for implementing a PHS strategy within their workplace; will obtain an understanding of the developments that lead to the creation of the National Standard; and, will be equipped with tools to begin implementing a psychological health and safety strategy within their organization.
Manager Certificate Courses
Our Manager courses place specific emphasis on the needs of managers who are supporting individual employees experiencing emotional distress or mental health issues or disorders.
Please note: participants must first complete the Basic Level course before proceeding into the Manager Certificate. Those who successfully complete all three courses will receive a Certificate in Managing Psychological Health Issues at Work
PHS 0210 – Key Principles for Managers
This is an introductory course and will provide managers with an overview of the basic issues that arise when managing psychological health issues at work. The course will identify fundamental concepts in dealing with psychological health issues in the workplace for managers, and will provide practical strategies for managers to respond more effectively in supporting employees with psychological health issues. Students will obtain an understanding of the most common presenting psychological health disorders in the workplace and how they impact work function; will understand the impact work has on psychological health; learn to identify signs and symptoms that an employee is struggling with mental health issues; learn how to effectively respond to a distressed employee; and, gain an understanding of how to manage workplace absences and accommodation.
PHS 0220 – Enhancing Managers’ Emotional Intelligence Skills
This is an advanced course that provides skills and strategies that managers can use to enhance their emotional intelligence skills in the workplace. Students will gain an understanding of their strengths as managers, and identify areas for improvement; will learn how to understand and manage their own negative emotions and reactions; will learn how to understand and manage others’ negative emotions and reactions; will learn how to implement effective communication strategies; will understand solution-focused resolution of worker conflict; and, will learn about effective performance management.
