The University of Fredericton, WCB-Alberta partner to support workplace mental health issues
The University of Fredericton (UFred) is pleased to announce a partnership agreement with the Workers’ Compensation Board of Alberta (WCB-Alberta).
The partnership aims to provide psychological health and wellness training to various employer communities within the province of Alberta. UFred will provide online psychological health and safety certificate programs at the basic, advanced and managerial levels and course modules based on enhancing workplace resiliency to environmental stressors. This training includes theory and application via UFred’s Psychological Health and Safety (PHS) programs, which were developed by some of Canada’s foremost experts in psychological health and safety education. The programs emphasize content related to the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace, how to manage mental health issues at work and worker resiliency.
The goals of this initiative are to:
Reduce costs related to sick time and time away from work that is exacerbated by mental illness and mental health issues;
Reduce stigma as it relates to mental health in the workplace;
Encourage employees to seek supports as required;
Proactively reach employees before psychological health and safety issues become systemic; and
Enhance the experience of WCB-Alberta constituents by providing training at the right time, when it is needed, and in a flexible delivery format.
UFred’s approach to PHS education is to enhance participant engagement through interactivity and the use of rich media, as well as a user-friendly educational learning experience that is delivered on-demand.
UFred’s Vice President of Academics, Dr. Sheri McKillop, is a firm believer in making psychological health and safety education affordable and accessible.

It is crucial to provide employers with valuable tools to help combat mental health issues in the workplace and beyond.
Marcela Matthew, WCB-Alberta’s Vice President, Millard Health & Special Care Services, says UFred’s courses arm employers with critical tools to support employees and their mental wellness at work.
“As an organization committed to helping workers suffering from work-related psychological injury achieve recovery and a safe return to work, we see the benefit of a supportive and informed work environment,” she said.
Matthew believes access to education, proactive planning and reintegration strategies prepares Alberta’s employers not only to support workplace psychological injuries but to prevent it as well.
