Christine Russell
Business Development Manager

With an undergraduate degree in Mass Communications and Business, Christine began her career concentrating on media and marketing. She had a goal of working in a scientifically focused arena and this led her to transition into a sales career, selling pharmaceuticals and surgical devices. Currently, she is a Business Development Manager for a niche surgical device company. As for her personal life, “I am the mother of two school-aged children and love all that urban life has to offer,” she said.

When deciding to pursue her education, Christine already had a well-established career. She knew she needed a more flexible business program than most traditional bricks and mortar schools offered and that included courses relevant to her profession:

As a committed lifelong learner, the University of Fredericton’s (UFred) online format allowed me to pursue my academic ambitions while complementing my family and professional obligations. The program’s focus of Innovation Leadership is directly applicable to my career, as the core of the surgical device environment is innovation.

Christine said she has already realized tremendous benefit from her Executive MBA (EMBA) studies with UFred:

“During the course of the program, I switched organizations and took on a far more complex role. The UFred EMBA provided the acumen to achieve more within this new and ambitious role. Personally, earning an EMBA fulfils a key goal. The process has taught me increased discipline, time management, and provided me with an enhanced professional network.”

She credited the online format as the key factor for allowing her to achieve her EMBA. The flexibility helped fit every aspect of her life, professional and personal:

“Between a hectic professional schedule that encompasses international travel and family obligations, the online format is a win. My children love that we complete homework together and my eldest daughter often listened to lectures with me. The love of learning is contagious!”

The most beneficial part of the program for Christine was the flexibility and diversity of the students enrolled in the program. “The online program expands the classroom environment to a national network of UFred peers. I’ve learned a great deal from collaborating with students across the country who work in different industries,” she said.

When asked if she would confidently recommend UFred to others, she replied: “Absolutely. It’s an excellent program – relevant and fulfilling.”

Jason Mapplebeck

Jason Mapplebeck has worked in the fields of sales, IT, and as a headhunter.  As his career progressed and he moved into leadership and management roles, obtaining his Executive MBA was the logical next step to supplement his varied work experience.

With a busy full-time career and two young children at home, Jason knew a traditional university environment would not be a viable option.

To embark on an MBA is not a decision to be taken lightly. Students commit time and money to obtaining a degree. Jason took pains to be sure that he would receive the education he needed to expand his knowledge and further his career:

Part of my selection process included contacting the Ministry of Education in New Brunswick to verify the accreditation of the University of Fredericton. The person who granted the University of Fredericton their accreditation is the same person who accredited the undergraduate university I attended previously. This gave me the confidence that I was joining a world class institution with the flexibility to ensure success.

Jason chose the Executive MBA degree program at the University of Fredericton (UFred) for the flexibility and quality education it offered. With a job that required frequent travel, attending class in person would not be possible:

“I have attended class while in Atlanta, Georgia, Orlando, Florida, Edmonton, Alberta, and on “hands-free” while driving on Highway 400 from Sudbury to Toronto. This program has enabled me to attend classes anywhere in the world as long as I have connectivity.”

Busy individuals often question how they will manage busy careers and personal lives, and also fit education into their schedules. Jason describes it as balance: “I study early in the mornings during the weekend, or late evenings during the work week. By focusing on my studies when time permits, I am able to drive the results I want.”

Jason’s favorite part of his education so far is the diversified experience of the faculty members within the Sandermoen School of Business at UFred, “The professors that conduct the classes are faculty members in institutions around the world and bring with them a wealth of practical knowledge combined with academia,” he said.

When asked if he would confidently recommend UFred to others, he replied, “I have, and will continue to recommend the University of Fredericton to anyone serious about programs that are offered, especially the MBA and Executive MBA programs.”

 Jennifer Buchanan, MBA, MTA
Chief Executive Officer, JB Music Therapy

Music Therapy in Western Canada; the Beginnings

Music Therapy was relatively unknown when Jennifer Buchanan finished her degree program out of Capilano University in British Columbia in 1991. At the age of 21, she loaded her car and traveled to Calgary to complete her certification, which required 1000 hours of internship. “I can remember filling my car with all the stuff you think you need and I had all the wisdom of a 21-year old. I fell in love with this city.”

In the 25-years since, Jennifer has been responsible for the implementation of hundreds of music therapy programs through her well-established company JB Music Therapy, currently serving around 1,800 clients ranging in ages from 2-months old to 106-years old. She provides Music Therapy in Palliative care sites, hospice sites, mental health facilities, and more. She sees clients with visual impairment, dementia, cerebral palsy, autism, and a number of other issues seeking the benefits of Music Therapy.

The UFred Impact

Early in her career, professionals attempted to dissuade Jennifer from her chosen business calling it an “impossible business model.” She was bold in early days: “the nice thing about not knowing what you are doing at the beginning is that you do whatever you need to do; you’re constantly innovating,” she said.  What led her to the University of Fredericton was the moment when she came to the realization that she did not have the business knowledge she needed.

“I was just over that 40-year mark in my own personal age, and at about the 20-year mark of my business and I was really realizing that I wasn’t sure if this was truly viable and sustainable,” she said.

Jennifer’s business model differed from others in that it is a for-profit organization that both serves non-profits and operates among non-profits. When she would speak with other executives from larger companies, they possessed a “special language” that she felt she lacked. She began her search for business education:

“I was searching for an MBA program off and on for probably 3 to 4 years when I saw the Social Enterprise Leadership [specialty] stream at UFred. It was pretty emotional. I just knew that you basically developed this whole program just for me. I am really proud to have completed my education in Canada.”

With her MBA from the Sandermoen School of Business at UFred, Jennifer has developed confidence. “I started understanding my clients better,” she said. The knowledge, she’s gained at UFred has helped her increase her business:

“We’ve tripled our profit over the years that I’ve been at UFred. We’re creating more Music Therapy jobs, and we’re able to serve more people.”

Supporting Social Enterprise

Jennifer is not planning to slow down. When asked where she sees herself going professionally from here, she said:

“I’d like to write another book. My first book was on Music Therapy; my second book is going to be about Community Impact. I’ve been looking at that for some time. Also, I would like to do more training and education myself, supporting other small businesses, other social businesses, in particular across the country. Learning from them, partnering with them, and supporting the as best I can.”

Jennifer credits her MBA at UFred with helping her recognize her weaknesses and helping to “massage” them away. To other business owners she says, “there’s always going to be a way to improve your business so it can upgrade or impact on your community and in your own life.”

Please note: Jennifer’s testimonial is part of the larger campaign ‘UFred10’. To learn more about UFred10, click here.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Brock University, a Certificate in Health and Safety from Ryerson, wrote his CRSP in 2006, and began his Executive MBA with the University of Fredericton (UFred) in 2014.

When he is not at work or studying, Ryan maintains an active lifestyle:

“I am an avid athlete and was a member of the varsity basketball team at Brock. After university, I took up triathlon and since have completed four Ironman competitions. With all that said, my most important role is being a dad to a lovely little girl.”

As a member of senior leadership, Ryan regularly attends meetings with executives. It was during these meetings that he realized the need for further education. His extensive background in health and safety allowed him to actively make contributions to this portion of the agenda, but that he was ill prepared to discuss the business aspects:

“The meetings had safety as part of the agenda, but most of the discussion focused on business results, forecasts, strategy, budget, and financial targets. These were areas I wanted more exposure to, so I could be an active participant.”

Ryan credits the UFred EMBA program with giving him “more confidence and knowledge to actively participate in a business setting.” For those advanced career professionals, worried about tackling post graduate level education, he says:

The courses have taught me a lot about my personal character, communication style, leadership style, and ability to continuously learn, even as I get older. This program has reinforced my belief in myself to accomplish something very challenging and difficult such as the EMBA program.

A 20-year veteran of the hospitality industry, Sean Gray is no stranger to travel. He’s done business across North America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.  The husband and father of one is currently in the midst of a career transition and has taken steps that would allow him to put down roots in Moncton, NB; the city where he currently resides:

Higher education has always been a goal. Beyond simply expanding my knowledge and perspective on business, I wanted a designation that would assist in finding work in New Brunswick, diminishing the need to travel or relocate.

Sean believes that the fully online format and curriculum at the Sandermoen School of Business Executive MBA program is the new standard of education:

“Online study is, in my opinion, is the future of education. Being able to access course material and interact with students and professors at my leisure provided a great deal of time management flexibility. While classes were structured, interacting with students who were already familiar with electronic collaboration made group projects easier to accomplish.”

Sean needed a flexible program to help him build on his existing business knowledge. In the Executive MBA program at UFred, he found post-graduate level business education that was created primarily for advanced career professionals, and that was considerate of their diverse experience:

“This program has provided a comprehensive foundation in the world of business. It expanded on subjects already familiar to me and filled in areas that I had not been exposed to through my work experience. This program truly exposes students to all aspects of business and provides a new perspective on decision-making. I personally benefited in that I have more confidence in my ability to analyze and execute complex strategies.”

Regarding his studies, Sean explains that students are in control of their learning: “You get what you pay for and the more you put in, the more you get out,” he said, and added, “the professors were very good at providing appropriate feedback allowing students to grow.”

When asked if he would recommend UFred to others, Sean said, “I would strongly recommend UFred to anyone wishing to further their education. I do believe the environment is better suited for mature students.”

She researched several options with recommendations from several colleagues. With a desire to continue growing her career while finishing her degree, she decided on UFred:

The Executive MBA with a focus on Global Leadership seemed like the perfect fit for both my personality and my career.

Completing her degree gave Elayn a new sense of respect: “Obtaining my Executive MBA from UFred has empowered me to make much more educated decisions in the business arena within my current position. It has given me the confidence to develop new programs within our organization as well as grow the current programs that I am responsible for, increasing our revenue year over year.”

Marc Dionne began his career with Air Canada in the Logistics department and after 10-years, moved to IT consulting, specializing in the Warehouse Management (WM) module. Marc has recently been consulting mostly within the aerospace domain with definite plans to continue.

Drawn to UFred after a conversation with David Large, former Dean of the Sandermoen School of Business, Marc was intrigued with the idea of completing his studies online from where ever he was:

As a travelling consultant, an online program was the only feasible option to obtain an MBA.

He was, “…impressed with the curriculum, the professionalism of the staff, and its positive reputation as a strong, accredited, online Executive MBA program.”

Marc strengthened his organization and communication skills while creating a balance in all areas of his life:

“Incorporating course work into an already full agenda was not easy at the beginning, but after a few weeks, a rhythm evolved and became the secret to success. Studying online also allowed for flexibility, I was able to attend classes from home, hotels, airplanes, airports, and several other non-classroom environments.”

He also realized the time savings involved with online learning at UFred: “Although schools are generally centrally located, saving the commute to and from class on a weekly basis helped to achieve a healthy balance of home, work, and school.”

The online EMBA degree program at UFred exceeded Marc’s expectations: “The most important factor was the ability to maintain a progressing career and acquiring additional academics, in parallel.” His interactions with Student Services were consistent, reliable, and timely which helped to “mitigate the inherent stress of completing a program of that magnitude.”

“I am very confident recommending UFred, in fact, I have and will continue being an ambassador for UFred with colleagues, friends, family members, and potential students. UFred gave me an opportunity to obtain an MBA at a reasonable pace, a manageable price, all while providing all of the necessary support, which turned out to be a recipe for success.”

Fiorella Sist has more than 15 years of experience providing operations leadership in the mining, oil and gas, aviation, technical services, and manufacturing sectors. She is multilingual, fluent in English, French, Spanish and Italian, which she says, “have led business turnarounds in North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Pacific”. She finished the Sandermoen School of Business, Executive Master of Business Administration degree program in October 2016.

Due to the volume of international travel and heavy workload, Fiorella found herself doing work suitable to a graduate of an MBA program without the ability to study until she found UFred. “There are a lot of professionals, like me, who have a bachelor’s degree, but never had the time or physical ability to attend university”, she said, “UFred provides what today’s business professionals need to upgrade their skills and build up their careers.”

Fiorella found the ability to apply her studies real-time chiefly added real value to her work:

“Each class offered a glimpse into various topics revolving around the MBA coursework. Because I was going through the MBA program while still maintaining employment, I was able to probe deeper into my job and company, uncovering new insights I would not have otherwise encountered.”

In keeping with her choice of specialty stream, Global Leadership, Fiorella also took part in the inaugural International Field Study (IFS) program held in Amsterdam offered by the University of Fredericton in partnership with Wittenborg University. This program was designed to help students gain an understanding of the intricacies of international business. She was pleased to join her teammates and professors in person for a part of her study. She said it “mimicked what really happens in a global business – whereas 99% of the time, you are connecting with your fellow employees in other global affiliates via emails, conference calls and online meetings – but, once in a while, you meet face-to-face as a group for a very important project or event.”

Fiorella recommends UFred to others, saying:

As each year goes by, businesses are following the trend of more globalization and more digitalization. It makes sense for modern university education to follow in the footsteps of businesses, and leverage what technology has to offer. UFred provides what today’s business professionals need to upgrade their skills and build up their careers.

As of December 2016, Fiorella became a member of the Academic Board of the University of Fredericton. The University’s Academic Board works with other authorities and represents a place for advocacy of academics.

She prides herself on being hard-working with a “roll-up-your-sleeves” management style.

She was drawn to the University of Fredericton (UFred) online MBA program due to the ease and flexibility she experienced while focusing on her work and family schedules:

“Studying online has allowed me to ‘fit’ school into my schedule. As most of us are employed full-time, have significant others, and some of us have children, the time available to add post-secondary education is a juggling act.”

Heather knows that her feedback is important to the staff and faculty at UFred, and regarding the EMBA degree program she says:

“This provides you with an excellent framework divided into 7-weeks of compressed delivery, where you can immerse yourself in a program and really reap the benefits through group work, discussions, and the weekly posts.”

The online delivery at UFred has allowed Heather to save time by not requiring her to travel to and from campus, while still allowing her the benefit of group work. She experienced “Camaraderie with new people across Canada. Through teamwork in most courses, you are able to meet new people, and build strong working relationships.”

Heather would recommend UFred to other students searching for an online EMBA degree program:

As I am in the last six months of the journey towards my EMBA, and I would say that personally it has helped me to refocus my priorities and truly live what we promote in post-secondary (education) as ‘lifelong learning’.

Operations Coordinator

A 2000 graduate of Holland College and a lifelong resident of PEI, Tammy Wall has worked in both the public and the private sector. Well-versed in operations management, she has spent a great deal of the last 16-years working with entrepreneurs. She has a genuine passion for seeing their projects come to life.

Tammy researched Executive MBA (Executive MBA) degree programs for years, stating, “While I didn’t have an undergraduate degree, I had many years of experience in operational management, as well as a strong foundation from my diploma at Holland College.”

A busy mother of two, community volunteer, and operations manager, Tammy chose the University of Fredericton for the online delivery, cost, and reputation. UFred provided a program where she wouldn’t be “tied to a classroom” and, with a son soon beginning college, one that she could afford.

The specialty stream in Innovation Leadership has been especially helpful to Tammy in her career:
“I currently work in a food product development center in Prince Edward Island. My work often requires innovative leadership in guiding clients through their development process. It requires a strong understanding of business and markets, as well as costing and even learning about food science and culinary arts.”

Before completing her Executive MBA, Tammy had already found value in her UFred education in how it applies to her job:

I have had several people comment at work on how they see a difference in how I approach challenges and opportunities since starting this course. There are many courses that are so directly applicable to what I do it has been easy to incorporate it into my day to day work.

Tammy believes that being given the opportunity to learn from other students has benefited her. She found that the collaboration in UFred’s online learning environment encouraged discussion, sharing of best practices, and lessons, which helped her to learn.

She indicates that her interactions with Student Services, though not frequent, have always been prompt and professional. She trusts that the feedback she provides will help UFred in its goal to offer comprehensive business education to students now and in the future.

Jo-Anne Henderson-White has lived and worked in Nunavut for the past 15-years, interacting with Inuit communities ranging in size, with populations from 250 to 6000 people. During that time, she held the position of Community Social Services worker, supervisor, Direct of Social Programs, and when they established her current department, the first Regional Director. She enjoys sports, travel, and outdoor activities with her partner and her three children.

Jo-Anne currently holds a “BA in Sociology with a Minor in French, Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), and Master is Social Work (MSW), Certification of Accreditation: Canadian Professional Supervisor.” A proponent of life-long learning, she wanted to continue her education. She chose the University of Fredericton due to her remote location:

“Studying online provided the opportunity to continue my learning and simultaneously to apply what I have learned within my work environment. It provided me with the ability to access knowledge and augmented learning without disrupting my work and my personal life by having to relocate to access the program. A whole new work opened up to me right within my home and community. I would not have been able to achieve what I have thus far without the opportunity this program has provided.”

She selected the specialty stream in Innovation Leadership because it best suited her needs. “I felt that this would not only be beneficial to me but to those that I live and work with her in Nunavut,” she said, “it has allowed me to apply what I learn in real-time in my work environment and provides new lenses from which I can view issues and challenges.”

Her favorite part of the experience was “the interactions that I had with the rest of the UFred learning community,” she said. She enjoyed her Marketing course and the specialty stream in Innovation Leadership segment best. Jo-Anne was thrilled with the online delivery by the UFred professors:

“They are genuinely interested in the students and are so engaging. They all made their excitement about their courses ring out in their delivery and the projects that they assigned with each course.”

Jo-Anne recommends the University of Fredericton with confidence:

I have recommended the program to friends and colleagues, and I would recommend the program to anyone else looking for a truly exciting learning experience that is in tune with the business sector that offers excellent value at a reasonable cost, and recognized in the professional world.

After receiving my undergraduate in a top-ranked program at a prestigious university I was somewhat hesitant to pursue my EMBA online, with a new university no less.

Looking back there is no question that I made the right decision in selecting The University of Fredericton.

They hold themselves to an exceptionally high academic standard. I was delighted to see the university executive recruit excellent professors who are established thought leaders in their respective disciplines; the university holds their professors to the same high standards as the students. This translates to a rich, relevant, robust learning experience. I have spent much time comparing my experience with friends and colleagues who have received their (E)MBAs from Ivy League schools and we have all concluded, you get out of it what you put into it, regardless of the institution. With the University of Fredericton I went in knowing that relative to an Ivy League school I was sacrificing networking opportunities in favour of keeping my wallet intact and enjoying the benefits of learning online. If you are serious about pursuing an EMBA and you are prepared to make the necessary commitments then I strongly encourage you to consider The University of Fredericton. I am delighted with my decision.

The decision to choose the University of Fredericton was an easy one. After speaking to the Student Services Coordinator and reviewing the University website, I was able to make an informed decision to enroll into the Executive MBA program. I have a fairly young family and expecting our third child this October, 2011 and I feel that I have the flexibility to study and complete my assignments within an acceptable time frame. Prioritizing your day ensures that you can commit the time you need for Masters Studies.

It is very true that your work experience is very valuable in referring to during your studies and discussions with students. I find that I learn not just through the textbooks but also through the experiences of my classmates.

I am ‘extremely likely’ to recommend this program to those individuals interested in a post graduate degree and are willing to take the time to learn!

I graduated from the University of Fredericton online Executive MBA program in December of 2010, a program I thoroughly enjoyed. I had the benefit of strong family support and feel that my investment in continuing my education has already paid off. I enjoyed the content of the classes, the workload and the pace of the program. I found myself looking forward to the weekly on-line classes as being able to interact directly with my classmates gave me the opportunity to learn a great deal from my fellow students. It was a real benefit to be able to learn from other students real life experiences. During my time in the program I was able to develop great relationships with people not only from various areas of Canada, but from various industries as well. What impressed me was the support I received from the staff and professors from the University of Fredericton. The staff helped me countless times, always taking the time to answer my questions quickly. This included questions I had during my evaluation of the program, during the program itself and even after I had completed the program when I had some tax questions.

The professors from the University were not only very knowledgeable and experienced in their areas, they were also very approachable.

In several instances I was able to approach the professors about career related questions, in some cases long after my classes were completed. My most memorable part of the MBA program was the integration project. I was teamed up with a great partner and we worked long and very hard on a great project for a leading global food producing company. I learned a great deal about an area that I would never have been part of unless I was part of this project. What initially seemed like an insurmountable task turned out to be an accomplishment that I am very proud of, even long after the project has completed.

Although I currently live in Nunavut, I grew up just outside of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in a small coastal French community where most of the population make their living from the sea. I have since bought a house not far from Yarmouth and my family spends as much time as we can there in the summer.

The beginning of my post-secondary education was at Dalhousie University where I studied biology and psychology, with my goal being to enroll in medical school. When that did not work out, I went back home and worked in the fishing industry on my father’s boat, predominantly fishing for lobster but for swordfish as well.

Then, off to school I went again, attending Queens University to do a Bachelor of Education. At the time, the idea was to move to the Arctic for a two year adventure – turns out that the Arctic has been my home for the last 15 years! During this time, I was President of the Nunavut Teachers’ Association from 2005-2009, and was also Vice-President of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation, which is the national voice of over 200,000 teachers across Canada.

While living and working in the Artic, I was able to complete my Executive MBA online, through UFred.

I even attended class in small remote communities via broadband, and also a couple of times from airport lounges. I was not in a position to physically attend a school, so online was the only choice. I enjoyed all parts of the program and found UFred, and all its staff and faculty, to be top notch.

All of that is now part of a past life; I am currently working as an independent consultant, focusing on working mostly with Northern communities, assisting with everything from contract negotiations to strategic planning and climate change adaptation.

The UFred Executive MBA program has successfully integrated online learning and the traditional face-to-face classroom environment into a unique virtual classroom utilizing synchronous technology for a complete learning experience. It is a delivery method that supports a full range of learning experiences encompassing a structural component, which includes the methodology of the taught courses and the qualifications of the professors and those running the program, and a self-directed component where managers are able to access resources that provide practical support to their regular management role. The Executive MBA program also provides the opportunity for on-the-job learning through different work experiences and sharing experiences with other managers.

My experience at UFred has convinced me that online methodology provides all the benefits of the traditional classroom environment and more. Key factors I considered in my decision to pursue an Executive online included:

  • Flexible learning options that allowed me to do course work from anywhere, anytime.
  • Accommodated financial constraints.
  • A growing number of Accredited Programs from which to choose.
  • Faculty that were highly qualified and experienced in their fields of study drawing on an international pool of leaders in their fields of study to ensure I received the most current and relevant education.
  • A growing trend in e-learning and online degrees being increasingly accepted by employers.
  • Accessibility provided to me living in a small rural community.

I can truly say that this experience has proved to be a valuable learning experience that has already paid dividends; I have recently been appointed V.P.

Like many Sandermoen alumni, Johanna chose the University of Fredericton (UFred) for its convenience, flexibility, and comfortable learning environment. When a job opportunity arose in Montreal QC, she was enrolled in a Master’s program at another University that did not offer online courses. She was thrilled to be able to continue her education at UFred while working in Montreal and finish her degree during a period of partial bed confinement when she was nine months pregnant.

“The career accomplishment of which I am most proud is the opportunity I had to work in Quebec and learn firsthand how organizations work there; particularly how different their policies and legislation are from a human resources standpoint. Moreover, this experience significantly improved my French skills, which I use daily in my present position.”

Joanna’s career opportunities have brought her across the country, having lived and worked in Atlantic Canada, Alberta and Quebec. She has worked for the Miramichi Regional Health Authority as a Recruitment Officer, served as Corporate Recruiter for Irving Group Moncton, and was a Human Resources Consultant for Canada Bread.

In addition to the flexibility advantages that the University of Fredericton offers working professionals, the material from her courses was very applicable. Johanna says,

My UFred education prepared me for the budgetary, technical and process improvement challenges that organizations currently face.

Diversity is another advantage that UFred offers, as Johanna notes with her experience at the Sandermoen School of Business. The opportunity to work with fellow Executive MBA students and professors from across the country, and learning about the challenges that were being faced in different provinces was invaluable she says.

Now a mother of four-year-old Elissa, Johanna lives in Moncton NB with her partner, working for the City of Moncton as Manager of Employment and Recruitment. Whitney Keyes
Founder & CEO, WK Productions

Discovering her Passion for Social Enterprise

While at Microsoft during her late 20s/early 30s, Whitney Keyes often thought about getting her Master’s degree, but there never seemed to be enough time. She developed strong business acumen early on from her parents, who were artists and art professors. They owned a wholesale pottery business and a retail art gallery where Whitney was expected to help out. “I got entrepreneurialism in my blood at a young age,” she said. She focused her early education on the “science of trying to figure out how to communicate about a product or service; how to connect with customers.”

It wasn’t until Whitney left Microsoft and focused on her consulting company that she began to research MBA programs seriously. She found it challenging to choose the right one for her:

“I am very passionate about communication, journalism, and working with the media so, I looked into those types of advanced programs. I’m also very passionate about business, so, I also considered quite a few MBA programs.”

When she started her role with the United States Department of State, she began working with social entrepreneurs to explore the concept of bridging, which is using a business to do good in a community, in society, around the world, and how those two can fit together. “You do what a non-profit does but then apply a business framework,” she said. About seven years ago, she began to look for a program that had a social enterprise focus and “I just didn’t see much out there,” she said.

The UFred Impact

Whitney spent some time with a Canadian friend, and a student of the Sandermoen School of Business, who shared his UFred experience with her. It was then that she knew she had finally found the program for her:

“He was telling me how great of an experience he was having going to school at UFred and how much he valued the professors, his colleagues, and his cohorts; it was just full of incredible people doing amazing things, and he was learning so much. He told me the University was beginning to put together a new program focused on social enterprise. So, that really appealed to me, and that’s what led me to make the decision to continue my education.”

Whitney earned her MBA with a specialty stream in Social Enterprise Leadership in March 2016, and regularly uses the lessons she has learned:

“I’m using what I learned every single day, and it’s absolutely enhanced my career. I think there are practical aspects of pursuing your MBA, you can potentially leverage for a higher salary, and it gives you a certain amount of credibility in a different way that you didn’t have before.”

Though her UFred education was entirely online, Whitney found that she did not lack in personal connections made at other sorts of institutions; in fact, they may have been stronger:

“There’s just a different way of absorbing information when you are both feet in, day in day out within your classes with your colleagues as pa part of your larger cohort, associated with such a fantastic university and then getting access to these amazing professors with such diverse backgrounds and impressive CVs. I continue to keep in touch with many of my colleagues; I continued to learn from them and have them to go to; I’ve reached out to my professors as well on various occasions. It’s definitely been fantastic icing on my career cake, so to speak.”

A Different Sort of Education Online

In the US, Whitney is sometimes asked about the credibility of online education.

“Online education is still evolving, but sometimes it’s still questioned. What I always tell people is what was so beneficial for me, and what I think is pretty unique, was the phone classes (live vclasses). This isn’t just completing some easy exams online, or reading some information online, the fact that the university requires that students participate in phone classes (vclasses) is terrific. The professors are very engaging, making sure that you were not tuning out, playing video games, but really engaged in the lectures, and participating and calling on you. I mean it felt that I was in an actual classroom.”

Whitney enjoyed the challenging classes and the diversity of experience within the student body. “I had people that were in the oil industry, and working in the Prime Minister’s office, and social entrepreneurs running their own businesses,” she said, and added, “All different genders, and, because Canada is such an inclusive country, many different people from all around the world.” To suit her objectives, she needed this sort of distinct learning environment.

Whitney is the author of Propel: Five Ways to Amp Up Your Marketing & Accelerate Business and regularly writes for business publications and blogs including Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s Biz Bite Blog. Regarding the future, she said she is “academically inspired,” and may one day want to pursue her Ph.D.

A 2015 graduate of the Sandermoen School of Business Master of Business Administration degree program, Marc Medas began his journey with the University of Fredericton in 2011.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice with a concentration in law, Marc immediately began working as a public servant for the Government of Canada with the Federal Court. He had ambitions of furthering his education, yet like many early career professionals, Marc was unable to be away from work to attend a traditional campus. He decided that online learning was the answer.

Marc explored his options for degree programs that offered flexibility while manifesting, “… a high level of interaction and a high-quality academic experience.” The online MBA from UFred fit the bill. “The program expanded my knowledge and skills while I developed friendships with peers and faculty members. I also learned how to manage my time better and establish a positive work-life balance.” He was impressed with the ease of access to learning, the great support he received, and the collaboration with classmates in Canada and abroad.

Facility Manager

Unbeknownst to him, Alex Kollar set his career in motion by taking a part-time position as a general repair person for student residences to help pay for his undergraduate education. After graduation, this experience combined with his ability to speak French, proved that he possessed the skills needed to begin his role as a Facilities Coordinator for a company providing facilities management to TD Banks all across Canada. Today, he works as a Facility Manager for a company developing monetary security technology.

He found that to be competitive in his chosen field, he needed further education that would not require leaving his job while still providing a quality educational experience. “I wanted to invest in an MBA program that could accommodate my full-time career”, he said of UFred’s degree program. “The application of business management allowed me to move up in my Facilities Management career,” he said, “Learning proper business applications allowed me to better understand and track capital assets, amortization, and to reinvest retained earnings.”

Alex is fond of the diversity he has experienced with UFred:

“My favorite experiences at UFred are connecting with students, many of whom are from various professional backgrounds, age groups, and experiences”, he says, “UFred offered a flexible MBA program with diverse professors from all over Canada and the US.” He believes that this diversity led to high-quality conversations surrounding project work.

The online experience allowed Alex the ability to complete his studies from anywhere: “The technology and software that UFred provides allows me to connect to several devices from anywhere I happen to be located”, he says. He went on to say that it saves him valuable time, “The option of being involved in engaging classroom setting from the comfort of my own home relieves me of the stress of having to commute from work to another physical place on time.”

Alex knows that online does not mean disconnected:

“The student services representatives have always been helpful in responding to my questions, advising me of next courses to take and when to confirm enrollment. Although all of my correspondence is done by e-mail, Student Services does offer students the ability to speak with them over the phone. They return emails and questions very promptly.”

When asked if he would recommend UFred to others, Alex replied, “For those with busy work lives or for more mature persons thinking about returning back to school, and really anyone! Absolutely!”

Scott chose to pursue his MBA at the University of Fredericton (UFred) for a variety of reasons including the relevance of the program:

“The UFred MBA program attracted me as each of the MBA concentration offerings are based on industry needs. For example, based on my background in information technology consulting, my career focus on innovation and disruption mapped well to UFred’s MBA concentrations, particularly the Leadership and Innovation focus.”

When he discovered how affordable, diverse, and flexible the education experience is with UFred, he knew he had made the right decision:

Sharon E. McDowell
Senior Project Manager – Bell Canada

A 25-year employee of Bell Canada, Sharon McDowell has been a project manager for the last 10-years. She earned her undergraduate degree in English and History from the University of Western Ontario and dreamed for years of continuing her education.

Sharon shied away from pursuing an MBA in the past, based on her fear of the types of classes she had to take. With her own determination, and the support she received from the staff and faculty of the University of Fredericton (UFred), it finally became a reality:

My grade 11-accounting teacher will not believe his ears, but I really enjoyed the accounting and finance courses. These were the types of courses that mentally prevented me from pursuing my MBA before now. However, eventually you need to face what scares you head on – and that was Accounting. I ended up having a great professor, and I finally “got” accounting.

Sharon has already benefited from the learning style with UFred:

“I work (for the most part) with a virtual team. Most of my day is spent on conference calls with people I will never see face to face. I have to make an effort to get to know my team and build a trusting relationship with them to deliver a project successfully. The same for the online learning experience. I had to “meet” other students in my classes and work together to deliver quality projects. I believe that developing these academic partnerships virtually has provided me with the skills to develop my working relationships more fully.”

UFred’s online learning style was what drew Sharon. She said “Since I work full-time and have two very active children, on-line education offered me flexibility and cost savings versus attending an MBA program at a “bricks and mortar” school.”

Professionally, she has been encouraged to think differently: “I have a better understanding of how effective leadership drives better process management, budget allocation, and human resource management.” Personally, she added, “getting my MBA has been a great example to my children that learning never stops and that setting goals for yourself drives passion and commitment.”

The specialty stream in Global Leadership was a natural choice for Sharon: “Leadership development has always been an area of interest to me, and with the many companies taking their business globally, I felt that developing skills that were strategic and transferable would help me be a more effective leader,” she said.

As to whether she would recommend UFred to others, she said, “I have already, many times over.”

Ian McIntyre
Public Affairs Officer, Canadian Armed Forces

A November 2015 graduate of the MBA degree program with a specialty stream in Global Leadership, Ian McIntyre found his experience with the University of Fredericton was overwhelmingly positive.

He is a former Programmer and Database Administrator and has been a Public Affairs Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces since 2009. His current responsibilities require regularly advising senior officers and command staff on media engagement, strategic communications plans, and providing “media training sessions for military personnel at all rank levels, and coordinating media engagements during domestic and international operations.”

The online MBA degree program was the right fit for Ian:

“My schedule is busy, to say the least. In addition to being a regular Force member of the military, I am a father of two girls and do extensive volunteer work throughout my community. The online program that UFred offers allowed me to pursue the course of study that interested me while still being able to meet the other responsibilities in my life.”

For those who are apprehensive about the group work involved with the UFred MBA degree, Ian shares that he has received immense benefit from it:

“While the collaborative approach to projects provided its share of challenges, it was by far one of the most educational and personally enriching aspects of the course. In my own professional life, I consistently work in groups remotely, never actually meeting the people who I must not only direct but cooperate with from inception to completion of a project.”

Ian describes himself as “not one to sit in a classroom” but shares that “the online format was far more conducive to my own particular learning style and allowed me to excel in my case studies like never before.”

The MBA program has allowed me to engage on a deeper level with other command staff in the development and delivery of programs within the military

Ian says, “It has also given me a deeper understanding of the business and financial issues, allowing me to take on positions of greater responsibility in my volunteer role.

With such a great experience, Ian consistently recommends UFred to his friends and colleagues looking to increase their level of education.

Chris Stone, a Software Development Manager for a large high-tech company in Ottawa, Ontario, has amassed 31-years of experience in embedded software design and development experience. He is an expert in Linux Kernel and has written some of the software and helped to build the devices used to help us network as a global community. He achieved his MBA from the University of Fredericton (UFred) in June, 2016, and looks forward to leading the teams of software engineers that will bring to life the Internet of Things.

Self-examination and a desire to move into leadership roles drew Chris to seek out his MBA at UFred:

Engineers are great problem solvers but often are not great leaders. I knew this about myself and decided to seek leadership training so that I could take the next step in the evolution of my career and move to a leadership role.

The specialty stream in Innovation Leadership worked well with his experience. He found it best suited his style with a perfect combination of innovative tech mingled with leadership studies.

When he realized the time savings, Chris knew UFred was the best choice to study:

The fully online format saved time that I would have otherwise spent commuting to class or team meetings. Time is a scarce resource for me, so anything that saves time, and allows me to work more efficiently is valuable.

Considering the benefits of study with UFred, Chris researched cost and found that his degree would cost him much less than he expected and would leave him in a better financial position upon completion. “I could not justify spending $80,000 – $120,000 on a bricks and mortar MBA”, he said, “from a cost perspective, the UFred MBA is practical and it is easy to complete the degree without taking on debt risks.”

For those apprehensive to start, unsure with what life may bring, Chris shares details from his courageous battle with cancer, and how he was able to overcome it and resume his studies:

“During my cancer treatment, I always had the goal of resuming my studies to work towards, and Student Services made it clear it was possible. Finishing my MBA was the final accomplishment that proved that cancer could not beat me. UFred was there for it all, and I hold a great deal of gratitude towards all of the Students Services staff for helping me achieve that goal.”

Chris credits UFred with transforming him into the leader his team needed, “My whole team is more effective as I am able to navigate the ambiguities of a large organization and lead us all towards positive outcomes.” He is happy to recommend UFred as the alternative for busy, professionals.

He had a long-term desire to advance his knowledge and develop his leadership skills. While at the National Job Fair & Training Expo at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, representatives from the University of Fredericton (UFred) shared with Mohamud the payoffs of acquiring an MBA degree at UFred.

Mohamud found the flexibility of the online MBA degree program at UFred fit his “daily personal, family, and work schedule.” He could attend classes no matter where he was, and if he unexpectedly needed to miss a vclass, he could conveniently access the recorded copy at a later date.

He credits improved skills in assembling business plans, and a stronger ability to grasp the core activities of the various departments in his organization, with his versatile education:

I have gained an invaluable amount of knowledge in the areas of business, management, and leadership. An MBA is interdisciplinary, combining knowledge from finance, accounting, economics, sociology, and psychology

Mohamud believes that UFred alumni are ready to take on any leadership role, anywhere, once they complete their MBA:

“Working with team members in different parts of the country and synchronizing with them on meetings and teleconferences to complete assignments is a microcosm of operations performed by multi-national corporations. This practice makes students at UFred ready to assume a position at any company anywhere in the world and become effective.”

He has been actively recommending UFred to friends and family members and “will continue to do so.” Mohamud looks confidently forward to the future opportunities his new skills will bring.

Rosette Okala is a “citizen of the world.” She was born in Cameroon, raised in Belgium, and , has called Canada home for over 10-years where she now lives with her husband and two boys, aged 8-years and 6-months. Rosette has worked in a variety of sectors including healthcare, pharmaceutical, and most recently in consulting.

When she began to look for Master’s level education, Rosette knew she needed a program flexible enough to allow her to work full-time and provide for her family. Online education seemed to be the best fit for her, but she was concerned with the quality of the education offered by an online institution:

“I loved the fact that we had weekly classes with our professors where we could ask questions live and talk to one another. I had been very worried about the online format as I know often, students are left alone to read books and complete exams without much interaction with the professors and peers. While I am quite disciplined, I could not study that way, and this aspect alone was enough to convince me that the University of Fredericton (UFred) was it for me.”

Rosette was pleased with the affordability of the program and that she made diverse connections with students around the world:

“The tuition was reasonable and (the program) strengthened my ability to better collaborate with people near and far as we so did in many of my classes during my time there. My favorite part of the experience was the weekly live classes with people as far as from Nigeria. Having the opportunity to hear different perspectives from students all over the world was enriching.”

She started her MBA with the Sandermoen School of Business at UFred; Rosette selected the specialty stream in Global Leadership to help provide her the basis she needed for working in a global market:

I chose the Global Leadership program because I wanted to be well prepared to tackle the challenges that I encounter in the workplace. With a marketplace like Toronto that is so diverse, it is important to have the tools to navigate the issues that can rise.

Rosette credits her MBA from UFred for her professional growth, “I was able to get a good job with one of the “big 4″ before I even finished the program. I truly believe that having it on my resume made all the difference,” she said. Personally, she provided a living example of success to her kids:

“It is paramount for me to teach my kids by example and to juggle both work and school as I did hopefully will mark my sons in a way where they can say, anything truly is possible and if mom did it, so can we.”

Rosette chose the MBA program at UFred for the flexibility, quality program, and cost effectiveness. When asked if she was confident in recommending UFred to others, she said, “I am beyond confident in doing so.”

My ongoing experience with UFred continues to reinforce to me that I made the right choice in an educational institution in pursuit of post graduate studies. The distance education environment allows for instruction from professors from many different geographic regions. Consequently, the professors I have had the good fortune of learning from embody exemplary knowledge, experience and tremendous professional success in their respective subjects.

Likewise, my classmates who are situated all over the globe greatly contribute to my overall learning experience. While many live in different areas and work in different industries, there is a resounding commonality in that everyone brings considerable experience and knowledge and seems generally driven to learn and succeed. The expected workload can be considerable, and certainly manageable if properly planned. I have had success thus far in this program without putting my career or family on hold.

Finally, there is not enough praise I can provide to sufficiently recognize the excellent service provided by the administrative staff. The admission process was much more user-friendly than any I have experienced thus far. This was made possible by the excellent support I received from the Admissions staff. Also, the Student Coordinators (I have had 2) who have been assigned to me make everything so incredibly easy for the student. Not only do they take care of my schedule, course load, payments, etc., they respond to any questions I have within hours.

For me, the pursuit of continued education is driven through a personal intrinsic want, rather than a need for new employment. While simply a by-product of this education, I have realized two professional advancement opportunities since beginning my program (one year ago). Over-and-above the ‘MBA’ credential, I have gained considerable insight and knowledge into leadership philosophy and practice (global leadership major) as well as areas of business that I do not practice in my day-to-day work.

I strongly recommend UFred and the MBA with a specialty stream in Global Leadership program to anyone seeking continued educational growth in the business world.

When I began my MBA, I had been an adult educator for over 20 years. I was developing and teaching in an online web-based program and felt that the best way to meet the needs of my online learners was to experience this environment from the student perspective. I had completed other degrees in a traditional format. I felt that an online learning experience would prepare me to be a more skilled and effective online instructor.

With a background in psychology and education I was concerned about my ability to complete an MBA. Business was truly outside my comfort zone! I choose the University of Fredericton based on a recommendation from a leader within my organization. I was interested in the leadership focus of the program and I committed to completing the first course in leadership to see if I could be successful….and as they say, “The rest is history”.
I completed the degree in three years which required a tremendous amount of dedication and commitment but the learning environment and flexibility made it much easier than a traditional classroom. My full time employment required occasional travel so I was able to study wherever I was working.
Before enrolling I had been concerned about studying in an online environment because I learn best when interacting with others.

The University of Fredericton has designed their programs to require interaction with classmates and in fact:

I developed a very strong learning community with dedicated classmates throughout my studies.

The support and knowledge of the faculty was tremendous. At Sandermoen, online learning does not mean learning alone. I am still employed with my organization but I now have the skills and abilities to work on projects, manage others and provide leadership to the organization.

The professors are well-qualified and committed to the program and their students. Studying online has also exceeded my expectations, especially in terms of convenience!

Teaching business at the college level is already challenging; working on my MBA at UFred is helping me take my teaching to the next level. Working through complex business issues and strategies using a management lens is a real “eye opener!” A UFred MBA will also potentially open some future career opportunities in education management and the private sector.

And finally, the UFred management and administration team are clearly committed to a positive learning experience for students. I would highly recommend the UFred MBA.

Ben Silverberg
Cantor, Beth Torah

Ben Silverberg, a Sandermoen School of Business Alumnus, completed his Executive MBA with a specialty stream in Innovation Leadership in 2015.

Ben lives in Toronto, Ontario and works for Beth Torah, a religious organization involved in social action and fundraising.

Ben says that his time at Sandermoen was invaluable. He says that his courses have helped him gain a better understanding of business and have improved his leadership skills immensely.

The motivation behind selecting the Sandermoen School of Business was the flexibility of the program. Ben says:

It suited my schedule perfectly. I could work a full day, have dinner with my wife, and attend the v-classes in the evening.

In addition to this, Ben also notes that collaboration with other students, and the user-friendly online platform as particularly beneficial for him.

Ben has said he would recommend the University of Fredericton to anyone looking to improve their business without having to take time away from it. He says, “it is perfect for a family person with a full-time job who wants to better themselves professionally and financially.”

Ben is very grateful to his wife who encouraged him to pursue his EMBA. In his spare time, he volunteers at a retirement home and enjoys cooking and tennis.

Dr. Eda Wallace
Diagnostic Radiologist

A 2015 graduate of the Sandermoen School of Business, Master of Business Administration degree program with a specialty stream in Innovation Leadership, Eda came to the University of Fredericton with a strictly medical background. A wife, and mother of one son, she had trained as an Anesthesiologist and switched specialties to retrain in Radiology.

Eda quickly realized that there was a gap in her medical training.

“I became involved in helping to plan the management of diagnostic services for cancer patients across the province and realized how little I knew about management”, Eda said. When choosing to pursue an education that addressed this gap, she found that the online MBA at UFred offered her the flexibility she needed to study business, while furthering her career and working full time.

Unable to commit to studying in a traditional bricks and mortar environment, Eda found a new and beneficial way of learning at UFred:

It was great learning in a virtual classroom which was entirely new to me.

She is pleased to report that she did not lack personal support, “Student services were extremely helpful and the turnaround response time was excellent.”

The result of achieving her MBA was a new-found confidence: “I have less stress when making business decisions compared to before I did the MBA”, Eda said. She is now secure in the knowledge that her degree has helped her career growth and reports an increasing involvement at a more senior level in her hospital.

Eda has already suggested UFred to others and will keep doing so, “I will continue recommending the program as I have benefited from my experience.”
